The Kabini River originates from Wayanad (Kerala)  flows quietly through the  Nagarhole National Park, which encircles 55 acres of forestland, steep valleys, and water bodies. Kabini also known as Kapila it is the confluence of the Panamaram River and Mananthavady River. The backwaters of the Kabini reservoir is very rich in wildlife especially in summer when the water level recedes to form rich grassy meadows, once a private hunting grounds of the Maharaja of Mysore, Kabini was also a popular hunting grounds of the British Viceroys. Now it is one of the best wildlife sanctuaries in Karnataka, famous for its spectacular wildlife and bird life.








Kabini is a popular wildlife sanctuary in Karnataka’s exuberant jungles it is home to Tigers, Leopards, Gaurs, Deer and Elephants among other animals. Kabini is a ideal family wildlife getaway for a stay of 2 nights &  3 days  or longer, if you love the great outdoors.

Kabini is a year around destination you can visit any time of the year, the best season for wildlife sighting is from September to May. The forest turns a lush green between July and September

A early morning Jeep Safari is your best way to see some wildlife, all safaris are conducted by Jungle Lodges you are accompanied with trained Naturalist and experienced drivers who know the terrain and the biodiversity of the parks.

Morning your chances of wildlife sightings are more as the jungle wakes up and you can see a wide variety of bird life, Elephants, barking deer a chance sighting of a leopard or tiger is possible more in the summer months. The other way of getting around the park is by Elephant Safari to get a whole new perspective of the wildlife in Kabini, also you could try a dhoni (local boat) or coracles floating down the river these are circular bamboo boats lined with buffalo hide. If this seems too daring, try cruising on a motorboat which are available at Kabini.

Cool cotton clothing in earthy tones (remember you are visiting the jungle) Cameras, Binoculars, Mosquito repellent are a must on the list and your prescription medicines.



things to do:

Kabini has a sense of tranquility and solitude that envelops the forest reserve. The elephant rules here and if you are lucky, you may come across herds of elephants splashing and playing in the river or wading through the wilderness. The Tiger and leopard are much more elusive, while Sloth Bear, Gaur (Indian bison), Antelope, Sambar,  and a number of monkeys live here. Kabini also has the osprey, brown-headed fishing Eagle, Racket Tailed Drongo, Dolden Backed Woodpecker, Stork and Peafowl among almost 250 species of bird life you could visit any time of the year to watch the wildlife, spend some time at the watchtower near the river and you can view the wildlife as they come to the river.

Besides jeep safaris and elephant rides, boat rides are a good option to see wildlife along the gentle waters of Kabini most times you will sight herds of elephants on the river banks,  it could be small group of eight or at times if you are lucky you could see  200 plus elephants.

DAY – 1                          Arrival at Kabini River Lodge

1200 hrs                          Check in time at Kabini River Lodge. Freshen up on
arrival and relax.

1300 hrs                          Buffet lunch is served at the restaurant 'Gol Ghar'
overlooking the serene Kabini River or if weather is bad at the Viceroy's Bungalow

1400 –1500 hrs                Relax enjoy the facilities at the Resort

1530 –1600 hrs                Tea/Coffee is served in the Verandah of the Lodges

1630 – 1900 hrs               Jeep safari takes you on a tour of Nagarahole National Park, in the private vehicles of the JLR Resorts (Jeeps or Vans) you are accompanied by experienced Drivers and Naturalists who are familiar with the terrain, wildlife and the flora & fauna .

1930 hrs                          You are back at the Lodge

2000 hrs                          At the Viceroy's Bungalow you are shown videos on wildlife.

2100 hrs                          Buffet Dinner is served  around camp-fire at 'Gol Ghar'

DAY – 2                          Kabini River Lodge

0600 hrs                          Morning Coffee or Tea is served outside the rooms.

0630 hrs                          On a tour to the Park, you go on a boat ride ( local boats Coracle, you are provided safety jackets ) on the Kabini River accompanied by a Naturalist. You get to see a lot of aquatic Bird-life and also see crocodiles, peacocks  and if lucky you get to see other wild life on the water edge.

0930 hrs                          Back at the lodge for Breakfast at Gol Ghar the restaurant. 

1130 – 1200 hrs               Relax and later check out for your onward journey back home.
